With this software we can find out whether a computer system has a virus or not. The latest antiviruses not only detect viruses. Antivirus programs are now also equipped with the ability to detect surveillance devices. Not only that, antiviruses are now equipped with firewalls to protect computers from hackers and anti-spam attacks to prevent the entry of junk and / or virus emails into the user’s inbox.

2.2 Development of Antivirus

The first generation

This first generation antivirus only acts like a simple scanner. Antivirus scans programs to find virus signatures. Although the virus may contain variant characters, but essentially has the same bit structure and pattern in all copies. This technique is limited to the detection of known viruses. Another type of first generation antivirus is managing the program’s length (size) record and checking program length changes. The disadvantage of this first generation antivirus is that it is only able to detect a virus whose pattern has been identified by an antivirus for a virus whose pattern has not been recognized, and the scanning process will miss this virus.

Second generation

Antivirus in the second generation has been better and more developed than the previous generation, this generation is called a smart scanner (heuristic scanner). Scanning antivirus does not depend on specific markers. Antivirus uses smart rules (heuristic rules) to look for possible viral infections. The technique used is for example looking for code fragments that are often part of the virus. For example, an antivirus looks for the beginning of the encryption loop used by polymorphic viruses and finds the encryption key. Once the key is found, the antivirus can describe the virus to identify and then eliminate the virus infection.

Third Generation

This third generation antivirus uses the method of “activity traps” (activity trap). An antivirus program is a memory resident program. This program identifies viruses through their actions not from infected program structures. With this kind of antivirus, there is no need to develop smart markers and rules for a wide variety of viruses. In this way what is needed is to identify a small set of instructions that identify any attempt at infection. If this happens, the antivirus program intervenes immediately.

Fourth Generation

This generation is the current generation of antivirus, this antivirus uses full protection (full featured protection). This generation of antivirus uses a variety of antivirus techniques simultaneously. These techniques include scanning and activity traps. Antivirus also has a list of access capabilities that limit the ability of viruses to enter the system and limit the ability of viruses to modify files to infect files.

The way anti-virus works like this is a new approach borrowed from the technology applied in the Intrusion Detection System (IDS). This method is often referred to as Behavior-blocking detection. This method uses policy (policy) that must be applied to detect the presence of a virus.

If there is a “inappropriate” software behavior according to the policy applied, such as software that tries to access the address book to send e-mail en masse to the list of e-mails that are in the address book (this method is often used by virus to transmit the virus via e-mail), the anti-virus will stop the process carried out by the software.
